Over the last month I have talked about positive affect and optimism, but what good is talk without something practical to “do” about it?

First, I want to challenge you to think of at least three things you do to minimize stress in your life (walking, working out, or other appropriate distractions). Practice these often.

But I also want to give you some practical examples that have helped me immensely when it comes to managing stress.

Breathing

Breathe in for a count of five (through your nose) then let it out through your nose and mouth. You must breathe with your stomach though (babies and children naturally breathe this way). If your chest is rising, you are breathing wrong. Using your diaphragm, breathe so your belly rises with each breath.

Repeat this exercise two times in a row. When you repeat this every hour, you will train your body (in a matter of days) to release certain chemicals that will automatically help your body reduce stress.

I love this exercise because it can literally be done anywhere with very little time, so set your hourly reminder on your phone and start living less stressed!

In my next blog, we’ll talk about progressive relaxation.
