Are You a Negotiator: Yes or No?
Whether we like it or not, we are all negotiators. As humans we find ourselves negotiating on a daily basis with co-workers, friends, spouses and our children. We negotiate business deals, future plans, values or simply where to go out for dinner. So, since we are already negotiators, lets identify the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of negotiation: Preserving the relationship. We must place the people and relationships over the topic of conversation. Simply put, we must focus on the process over the content.
In the end we are faced with one glaring question: Is it worth winning the battle if we loose the war? Is it worth being “right” if we burn relational bridges in the process? I think not.
