One of my top values is being radically open or transparent.
In my book, The Truth Behind My Trident: Overcoming Life and Business Obstacles the Navy SEAL Way, I talk about what happens behind the scenes in the Special Forces communities. I share my honest story about my time as a SEAL and try to shed light on the realities (the good, bad and ugly) of military life.
It isn’t all roses.
Being transparent with my friends, family and co-workers means sharing what is appropriate at the right time. It’s not me backing up my emotional dump truck and unloading on people. It is having the courage to tell my whole story, owning my mistakes and being bold in the midst of vulnerability.
Over the years, I have found that radical openness and transparency are key ingredients to growth and healing. Without them, people remain stuck and oftentimes remain trapped behind the masks they wear.
